F1 design legend Ducarouge dies

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 25 Februari 2015 | 19.03

Wednesday, February 25th 2015, 01:11 GMT

Gerard Ducarouge and Ayrton Senna

Gerard Ducarouge, the legendary Formula 1 designer who produced winning cars for Jackie Stewart and Ayrton Senna, has died. He was 73.

The Frenchman's career in motor racing began in the 1960s with Matra in junior categories, before he helped design the MS80 that Stewart used on the way to winning the 1969 F1 world championship. Ducarouge subsequently guided Matra to success at Le Mans in the following decade, as the marque took three straight 24 Hours wins from 1972-74.

Leaving Matra to join the new Ligier team, again proved his design genius as he helped guide the team to its maiden F1 win in the 1977 Swedish Grand Prix.

After being dropped by Ligier mid-season in 1979, and having a brief foray with Alfa Romeo, Ducarouge was snapped up by Lotus in mid-1983 for perhaps the most memorable spell of his career.

As the team was kept steady by Peter Warr following the death of Colin Chapman, Ducarouge was drafted in and again delivered all that was asked of him.

Martin Brundle, Ligier, 1993 French GP, Magny-Cours

A push towards the front of the grid, helped by the arrival of Ayrton Senna as lead driver in 1985, produced some memorable race victories - including the Brazilian's famous maiden triumph at Estoril.

Another world championship title would elude him though and, as Lotus's fortunes faded in the 1990s, Ducarouge returned to France - first with Larrousse and then with Ligier, where he would remain until 1994.

Martin Brundle, who worked with Ducarouge in his final spell at Ligier, was one of the first to offer his condolences.

"That's sad, reading that F1 designer Gerard Ducarouge has died," he wrote on Twitter. "Worked with him at Ligier. Stylish, fun and clever man. RIP and condolences."

Mercedes holds fire on engine plans

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 01 Februari 2015 | 19.03

By Jonathan Noble Sunday, February 1st 2015, 09:43 GMT

Mercedes pre-season testing at Jerez

Mercedes says that it will only decide on how to use its engine development tokens once Formula 1's pre-season testing is finished.

The FIA told teams in December that in-season upgrades were now allowed, following a challenge from Ferrari that the regulations had failed to specify an exact date for delivering them.

The clarification means that manufacturers no longer have to ensure they have done all their work by the season-opening Australian Grand Prix - as had been the original idea.

OPINION: Engine loophole is a big chance for F1

Despite the fact that there is now more time to bring upgrades, Mercedes says that its 2015 plan remains unchanged - and that it will only commit to its programme when it knows how pre-season running has gone.

Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell said: "This decision hasn't altered our development strategy for 2015, which was always to gather the necessary data from pre-season testing in order to define and submit the engine specification for the opening race.

Mercedes officially launches W06 as test begins

"However, it does offer the opportunity to exploit this interpretation for further gain later in the season, should we choose to do so."

Mercedes could choose to hold fire on a number of potential improvements if it feels that it has enough of an edge early on. That could help deliver a bigger performance boost for the crunch phase of the title battle.

The team began proper testing of its new W06 at Jerez in Spain on Sunday, with Nico Rosberg setting the early pace.

New Williams makes first appearance

By Glenn Freeman Sunday, February 1st 2015, 07:55 GMT

Williams 2015 F1 car

The Williams Formula 1 team officially unveiled its 2015 FW37 at Jerez ahead of the first day of pre-season testing.

The British outfit had previously only shown computer renderings of its new car, which were revealed by F1 Racing magazine.

Williams enjoyed a resurgence in 2014 as it became a regular podium finisher on its way to finishing third in the constructors' championship, and team boss Frank Williams said the aim is to continue that upward trajectory this year.

"After such a strong season in 2014 we are looking to continue the move back towards the front of the grid," he said.

"The move from ninth to third was a tough challenge, but ultimately every step up from now on will be even harder.

"I am confident that we have the appropriate personnel and talent in this team to make those steps."

Valtteri Bottas is scheduled to take driving duties on the first day of official testing in Spain on Sunday.

Red Bull breaks cover in camouflage

Sunday, February 1st 2015, 08:16 GMT

Red Bull's 2015 car in testing livery

Red Bull's 2015 Formula 1 car emerged for the first time in a camouflage livery as Jerez testing began on Sunday morning.

The four-time champion team chose not to carry out any form of official launch or car unveiling for the Renault-powered RB11, instead heading straight out of the garage in the surprise colour scheme without ceremony.

Daniel Ricciardo is behind the wheel for the first day of running at Jerez. Toro Rosso graduate Daniil Kvyat replaces Ferari-bound Sebastian Vettel as his team-mate for 2015.

Red Bull's chief engineering officer Rob Marshall, who has stepped into the new role following Adrian Newey's change of emphasis, said that the majority of changes from the 2014 would be hard to spot, but that significant steps had been made.

"There are some changes that affect the shape of the front of the car but beyond that most of the changes are under the skin," he said.

"We've identified the areas where we can make improvements and we've worked hard on these.

"There won't be a lot that's visible to the naked eye but a lot of hard work has gone into the bits that are hidden."

There had been suggestions in the build-up to the test that Red Bull was struggling to be ready in time, but the team confirmed to AUTOSPORT on Saturday that the final crash tests had been passed, and it was among the first to hit the track on Sunday morning.

Team boss Christian Horner had previously admitted that Red Bull had opted for its tightest-ever car build programme in order to ensure that maximum developments were on the RB11.
