Wittmann to test 2012 STR at Imola

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 01 Desember 2014 | 19.03

Sunday, November 30th 2014, 16:34 GMT

Marco Wittmann wins the 2014 DTM title

DTM champion Marco Wittmann's BMW-arranged Formula 1 test will take place in a 2012 Toro Rosso at former San Marino Grand Prix venue Imola on Thursday.

BMW offered the test to Wittmann as a reward for his dominant performance in this year's DTM.

The 25-year-old German was a single-seater racer until the end of 2011, when he switched to what began as a test role with BMW after finishing second to Roberto Merhi in European Formula 3.

AUTOSPORT's top 10 DTM drivers of 2014

BMW announced at the DTM finale last month that it had arranged the run for Wittmann via its sponsor Red Bull, and has now firmed up the date and location, as well as the use of a 2012 car - the most modern permitted under F1's testing restrictions.

The Toro Rosso run will follow a variety of other post-title celebrations for Wittmann, including various awards in Germany and a recent outing in several 1980s BMW DTM cars.

"It has obviously been an extremely busy time for me since the end of the DTM season," he said.

"I have hardly spent a single day at home. However, I am still really enjoying myself.

"After all, the reason for me having all these appointments is the fact that I was crowned the DTM champion."

Hamilton: Alonso learned from 2007

By Jonathan Noble Monday, December 1st 2014, 11:37 GMT

Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton

Fernando Alonso and McLaren will not make the same mistakes that led to an acrimonious split last time they were together in Formula 1, reckons his former team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Alonso's switch to McLaren - and the identity of his team-mate - is set to be confirmed in the next few days, with the Woking-based team having delayed an original plan to reveal its line-up before the final race of the season.

AUTOSPORT understands that the final decision on Alonso's team-mate will be taken at a board meeting on December 4, although it is not clear when an official announcement will be made.

Although Alonso's last spell at McLaren in 2007 ended prematurely after a year when he spectacularly fell out with then team boss Ron Dennis, the team is confident their relationship can operate better this time.

Hamilton, whose equal status at McLaren seven years ago fuelled the clashes between Alonso and Dennis, firmly believes the situation will be different.

Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in 2007

Asked at Mercedes' end of season Stars & Cars event how he believed Alonso would get on with Dennis this time around, Hamilton said: "It is an interesting decision with the team, but I wish him all the best.

"It will be a new experience for them.

"Fernando has grown a huge amount over the years, both as a driver and maturity wise as well.

"And, having the experience previously with Ron, he will definitely have a much better handle on it and won't be in a tricky situation like last time."

McLaren has been trying to lure Alonso for several seasons now, and its overtures proved successful this year with the promise of a step up in form from new manufacturer partner Honda.

The Spaniard's decision to join McLaren has left the team with the difficult choice between Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button for the second seat.

While Button has the experience and outperformed Magnussen this season, Magnussen's long-term potential has kept him firmly in contention for the seat.

Raikkonen set to get new engineer

By Jonathan Noble Monday, December 1st 2014, 11:50 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen is set for a change of race engineer at the Ferrari Formula 1 team next year, with former Marussia chief engineer David Greenwood likely to get the role.

Greenwood has already been recruited by Ferrari following the recent collapse of Marussia.

He made his first appearance with his new Maranello team at last week's Abu Dhabi test, although his exact role for 2015 is still being specified.

AUTOSPORT understands, however, that Greenwood is likely to replace Antonio Spagnolo as Raikkonen's race engineer. Spagnolo is set for a factory role.

Raikkonen is known to get on well with British engineers, and amid his difficult 2014 campaign, Ferrari called upon David Llloyd mid-season to try to help improve communication between the Finnish driver and his engineers.

It has already been confirmed that new Ferrari signing Sebastian Vettel will be engineered by Riccardo Adami, who previously worked with the German at Toro Rosso.

STELLA SWITCHING TO MCLAREN

Former Ferrari race engineer Andrea Stella, who worked with Fernando Alonso, is switching to McLaren with the Spanish driver.

Although Stella will work in a race engineering role initially, it is understood that the long-term plan is for him to take on a wider role within the Woking-based team.
