F1 engine builder Brian Hart dies

By Edd Straw Monday, January 6th 2014, 11:30 GMT

Brian Hart

Formula 1 engine builder Brian Hart has died at the age of 77.

Hart, born in 1936, fell in love with motor-racing when he attended the 1949 British Grand Prix at Silverstone and his initial involvement with the sport came as a driver.

He started out racing in the 1172cc Clubmans formula, dominating the category in 1959.

He then stepped into single-seater racing, emerging as a racewinner in Formula Junior, F3 and F2 machinery.

Hart's best season in the European F2 championship came in 1967, driving the Frank Costin-designed Protos, which was powered by the Cosworth FVA engine prepped by Hart.

He finished 10th in the championship, finishing second to Frank Gardner in the Deutschland Trophy at Hockenheim and setting fastest lap thanks to the aerodynamically sleek bodywork of the Protos.

While Hart continue racing until 1972, his attention turned increasingly to engine preparation.

He served an apprenticeship with the De Havilland Aircraft Company before moving to Cosworth.

Brian Hart Ltd was formed in 1969 and based in Harlow in Essex. Hart specialised in servicing of the FVA engine and also developed the famous Ford BDA powerplant for rallying.

Formula 2 success

Hart also adapted the BDA for use in F2. The engine propelled Ronnie Peterson's March to the '71 European title, with Mike Hailwood winning for Team Surtees a year later.

He struggled to raise the finances to take on the likes of BMW and Renault in mid-70s F2, although did re-emerge as a racewinning force in '77 and '78 with drivers of the calibre of Keke Rosberg and Derek Daly.

Key to Hart's graduation to F1 was an association with Toleman Group, which approached him to supply engines to its F2 team in '79.

That year, Brian Henton narrowly missed out on the title driving the Toleman-run Hart-engined Ralt RT2.

In 1980, Brian Henton and Derek Warwick finished first and second in the European championship driving the Toleman-Hart TG280. The next step was grand prix racing.

Brian Hart

Into Formula 1

When Toleman stepped into grand prix racing in 1981, Hart built a four-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine. By his own admission, it was not ready and Henton and Warwick qualified only for one race apiece.

Things gradually improved and Hart soon earned plaudits for producing a good engine on a small budget. After failing to score in '82, Toleman finished ninth in the constructors' championship the following year with Warwick claiming two fourth places.

In 1984 Hart expanded to supply engines to RAM and Spirit and enjoyed a breakthrough year, with Ayrton Senna also finishing a stunning second in the Monaco Grand Prix for Toleman. The Brazilian added a further two podium finishes later in the year.

Hart continued to supply Toleman with engines for one more year, with Teo Fabi claiming pole position at Hockenheim, but the team transformed into Benetton in 1986 and landed a BMW engine supply.

After briefly supplying the ambitious Haas team in late-85 and early '86 before the Ford turbo engine was ready, Hart returned to prepping customer Cosworth engines.

Return with Jordan

In 1993, Hart returned to F1 with a 3.5-litre normally-aspirated V10 engine for the Jordan team. After a difficult first season, the partnership excelled in 1994 despite its budget being a fraction of the size of the major manufacturers.

Rubens Barrichello finished third in the 1994 Pacific Grand Prix, backing that up with a string of good results, including pole position with a perfectly-timed qualifying run in wet conditions at Spa.

Despite finishing fifth in the constructors' championship, Jordan had no choice but to take a works deal with Peugeot for the following season given the commercial value of a factory deal.

Hart switched to Footwork/Arrows for the following two seasons, with Gianni Morbidelli finishing third in the 1995 Australian GP, before powering Minardi in '97.

Hart's new V10 design then became the Arrows unit used by Tom Walkinshaw's team in '98 and '99. Walkinshaw acquired Brian Hart Ltd, which led to Hart's departure from the sport.

Warning over Schumacher speculation

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 05 Januari 2014 | 19.03

Saturday, January 4th 2014, 12:12 GMT

Michael Schumacher, 2012

Michael Schumacher's management has urged that speculative reports about the seven-time Formula 1 world champion's condition should be disregarded.

Schumacher remains in a critical but stable condition in an induced coma in a Grenoble hospital having suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident last Sunday.

His manager Sabine Kehm issued a statement on Saturday morning underlining that information regarding Schumacher's health would only be issued via the hospital or herself, following reports that attributed comments to ex-F1 driver Philippe Streiff.

"Michael's condition remains critical but stable," said Kehm's statement.

"We would like to clearly stress that any information regarding Michael's health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as invalid and pure speculation.

"In consultation with the doctors treating Michael, it is not expected there there will be any press conference before Monday."

Kehm also addressed reports that police were examining footage from a helmet camera worn by Schumacher during the skiing trip on which the accident happened.

"Michael's helmet camera was voluntarily given to the investigating authorities by the family," she said.

"That this should have been done against the wishes of the family is untrue.

"We ask you to respect the continued privacy of the family."

On Friday evening Robert Kubica, who suffered life-threatening injuries of his own in his February 2011 rally crash, expressed his concern about press intrusion affecting Schumacher's family.

"I was in a similar situation and I know media can play quite a hard game in a very difficult period for him, his family and close friends," said Kubica.

"I wish him all the best and definitely keep fingers crossed he will recover and everything will be fine."

Schumacher family hail fans' support

By Jonathan Noble Friday, January 3rd 2014, 17:41 GMT

Ferrari fans' Michael Schumacher tribute

Michael Schumacher's family say they have been "overwhelmed" by fans' support for the seven-time Formula 1 world champion as he continues to be treated in hospital following his skiing accident.

On the German's 45th birthday on Friday, more than 200 Ferrari fans joined a silent tribute outside the University Hospital in Grenoble where Schumacher remains in a critical condition.

With those attending the event wearing Ferrari red team kit, and unfolding a large Prancing Horse banner, the Schumacher family said it was in no doubt how deep the feeling of support was.

"We are overwhelmed!" said a short statement on Schumacher's official website. "The incredible sympathies shown today by the Ferrari fans outside the hospital has utterly overwhelmed us and moved us all to tears.

"We are deeply grateful for it and also for all the heart warming and heartfelt wishes for Michael to get well soon, which have reached us from all over the world."

Schumacher suffered serious head injuries in the crash last weekend, and although his condition is now stable, he remains in an induced coma following two brain operations.

Horner predicts rapid development rate

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 03 Januari 2014 | 19.03

By Edd Straw Friday, January 3rd 2014, 11:10 GMT
Christian Horner

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expects to see a rapid rate of car development in the early stages of 2014.

Next year's cars will be built around a set of regulations centred on the new 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engines, with a wide range of car designs expected to appear in pre- season testing.

Just was when F1 had its last major rule change in 2009, Horner predicts significant progress for all teams during the year and believes this is an area where his team can excel.

"Because the regulations are going to be pretty immature, like we saw in 2009 ideas will flow pretty quickly," Horner told AUTOSPORT.

"So you will probably see quite a rapid range of development early on in the year as people are finding their feet.

"We have demonstrated over the last few years that we can develop the car effectively.

"Hopefully that will apply to next year as well."

Horner has also warned that there will be reliability struggles during pre-season testing as both teams and engine manufacturers understand their new packages.

"Reliability is going to be a fundamental issue in the first three or four races whilst teams get on top of the issues.

"It's inevitable, as 12 days of running over three tests is not that much for such a big regulation change.

"You are going to see some early issues with these power units."

2013 crown was 'never on' - Wolff

Mercedes admits 2014 title pressure

By Jonathan Noble Friday, January 3rd 2014, 11:38 GMT

Mercedes is under pressure to deliver a full-on championship assault this season after doing so well in 2013, reckons its motorsport boss Toto Wolff.

The German car manufacturer won three races last year as Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg helped guide it to second place in the constructors' championship.

And it is that level of progress - ahead of a major rules overhaul that is set to favour the works teams - that has left its bosses expecting even more in 2014.

Wolff, who is now running the team with Paddy Lowe following Ross Brawn's decision to step down, concedes that the Brackley-based squad must not do worse than it did last year.

"No, we cannot afford that," said Wolff in an exclusive interview with AUTOSPORT.

"If we had finished fourth or third, people could say there will be an evolution before being world champion.

"But now the expectations are very high, and we have to manage those expectations because winning a world championship is not an easy task. It is very difficult.

"It is different to winning races because you have to put everything together. But can we honestly say that we are a contender for the world championship? No."

Wolff thinks it vital that Mercedes must not let itself get either too bullish or too downbeat about its prospects, as both approaches could hurt it.

"Optimism is always dangerous," he said. "You have to be a pessimistic optimist.

"The general tendency has to be pessimistic. You have to not take it for granted that it is going to happen. But also you must not make your life bad by being too pessimistic.

"What I can see is the effort, intelligence and resource being put into the engine development and powertrain development - and I believe that the right things are being done.

"Now do I know what Ferrari and Renault are doing? No. I am sure they have intelligent people and they are doing good work there as well. It is all crystal-ball reading."

Although paddock speculation has pointed to Mercedes starting the season with the best engine, Wolff is not so convinced that matters will be so clear cut.

"We don't know. It is all based on rumours and gossip, and can you fundamentally rely and make an opinion on what A has said to B, when probably both of them have no clue!

"I remember from Viry, and from I have seen at Maranello, that these guys are no fools. They are very intelligent people working very hard and I doubt one engine manufacturer is going to have a massive advantage."

Schumacher still in critical condition

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 02 Januari 2014 | 19.03

Thursday, January 2nd 2014, 10:44 GMT

Michael Schumacher, 2012

Michael Schumacher remains in a critical condition in hospital, with no official update expected today from his management team or the doctors looking after him.

Media at the hospital have been told that for the first time since the accident there are no plans for an official update about his condition from either doctors or his manager Sabine Kehm as there have been no fresh developments.

However, should there be any changes in his condition then details will be made public.

The seven-time world champion is in an induced coma in the University Hospital of Grenoble after suffering serious head injuries during a skiing accident at the weekend.

Having undergone two successful brain operations, Schumacher's condition has stabilised.

But despite some improvements over the past 48 hours, doctors still believe it is too early to give a prognosis.

Schumacher's family have been at his bedside, and FIA president Jean Todt - who worked with the German during his successful spell at Ferrari - has also visited him.

Vettel 2013 sweep never likely - Newey

By Jonathan Noble and Matt Beer Thursday, January 2nd 2014, 10:22 GMT

Sebastian Vettel F1 2013

Red Bull's Adrian Newey doubts Sebastian Vettel could have taken a clean sweep of the 2013 Formula 1 season even if Pirelli's more favourable tyres had been used all year.

Pirelli's switch back to 2012 construction from the Hungarian Grand Prix worked in Red Bull's favour.

Although Vettel was defeated by Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes at the Hungaroring, he won every race from the following Spa event onwards.

But Newey feels season-long domination was unlikely regardless of tyres, as he does not think Red Bull had the pace to steamroller the competition early on regardless of the rubber.

"I think we were, in truth, still finding our feet again after the exhausts were so heavily restricted through position and mapping at the end of 2011," Newey said when asked by AUTOSPORT if Vettel could have taken a season clean sweep.

"I would regard this year's car as very much last year's car with a few extra months between races rather than a new car. It was very much a very, very close relation of last year's car with a winter break.

"Last year and the early part of this year was still about learning how to get the car to work without the exhaust technology that we enjoyed in 2010 and 2011."

But he reckons Vettel's own performance was at a relentlessly high level throughout the season.

Adrian Newey F1

"I think Sebastian's driving this year showed a level of maturity that was quite stunning," said Newey.

"He is obviously young and learning and that has been the exciting thing.

"If you go back to 2009, our first year with him at Red Bull after Toro Rosso, he made mistakes and we made mistakes.

"I think together - Sebastian as a driver and us as a team - we have matured and developed, and hopefully we will make less mistakes."

Magnussen: I can emulate Hamilton

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, January 2nd 2014, 11:44 GMT
Magnussen: I can emulate Hamilton

Kevin Magnussen believes he can do what Lewis Hamilton did and make an immediate impression as a Formula 1 rookie with McLaren.

Although the young Danish driver does not have the luxury of the amount of testing mileage that Hamilton was able to complete before his own debut campaign in 2007, Magnussen is still positive that he can shine.

"He [Hamilton] had great success at McLaren arriving there as a rookie and it is definitely possible to do," said Magnussen in an exclusive interview with AUTOSPORT.

"I know he worked incredibly hard, and the good thing is that I am in the same team as he was.

"They [McLaren] have had a rookie before; they know how to treat a rookie and how to work with a rookie. That is good, a really good thing."

Although Magnussen accepts things are more difficult due to F1's tight testing restrictions, he says other factors are more in his favour, such as the way the current generation of drivers started competing so young.

"My generation of drivers have all started very early," he explained. "The previous generation of drivers started a bit later.

"So if you take a driver at 19 from my generation, he will be better prepared at 19 than a driver was from the previous generation because we have started earlier.

"I am not saying that I am 100 per cent ready for F1. You will always feel like you can do more, and you need a little bit more time."

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh thinks that Magnussen's chances of impressing are boosted by the fact that the regulations are so different this year.

"You can say actually this is an ideal opportunity because everything the older drivers have learned, all that experience, is different," said Whitmarsh.

"The power train is very, very different. The complexity of the whole energy cycling, and what is going to go on, is very different. So on that front he has as much experience as Fernando Alonso or Jenson Button."
